Robert F. Hill

Robert F. Hill est un cinéaste né à Port Rowan, Ontario, le 14 avril 1886. Il a fait carrière aux États-Unis, tournant plus d’une centaine de films, tout en étant crédité comme scénariste dans une cinquantaine de films et comme acteur dans autant de productions. Il s’est éteint à Los Angeles le 18 mars 1966.

La majorité de ses réalisations de l’époque du muet, des courts métrages pour l’essentiel, sont aujourd’hui considérées comme perdues. Il a été parmi les premiers à s’attaquer à des personnages populaires de la littérature ou de l’histoire, parmi lesquels Tarzan, le Capitaine Kidd, Robinson Crusoé, Phineas Fogg et Flash Gordon. Spécialiste des films d’action, il a touché au western, au policier et à la science-fiction.

Mandaté par la Universal pour ouvrir un studio au Japon, il est prévenu par un jeune consul américain qu’il risquait de voir son studio repris par les artisans locaux après un soulèvement mis en scène, destiné à le faire fuir. Décidé à abandonner le projet malgré le refus de la Universal, il ne pourra revenir en Amérique que grâce à un certificat médical attestant que son épouse avait besoin de traitements disponibles uniquement aux États-Unis. Celui qui lui a succédé au Japon a vu la prophétie consulaire se matérialiser et a quitté le pays.
